Year 6 Crucial Crew – Thursday 9th June 2022

On Thursday 9th June, the Year 6 pupils will be attending Nesscliffe Training Camp for a day of ‘Crucial Crew’ events.

Children will need to take a substantial packed lunch and large drink (in a plastic container please – not glass), a warm and waterproof coat or jacket, and will need suitable footwear, trousers and a school sweatshirt.

We shall leave the school at 8.50am on the coach and arrive back at school for approximately 3.00pm.  The school will be paying for half of the cost of the visit, so, a contribution of £4.00 towards the cost of staging this event would be much appreciated.  (Children not contributing will not be treated differently, although we do need sufficient voluntary contributions if the visit is to go ahead).  A letter will be sent home on Friday 27th May, please complete the consent slip and return it to school before Tuesday, 7th June.

Year 6 – Post from Mr Langford

Dear year six parents and carers

This morning, whilst driving their child to school, a parent had to swerve their car to avoid a group of year six children pushing and shoving each other in the middle of the road.

Such behaviour is unacceptable and, if it continues, I will have no choice but to ask the parents of those children involved to drop-off and collect their children from school.

Whilst this is incident involved only a small group of pupils, I ask all parents and carers to remind their children of the inherent dangers and potential risks of walking to school, especially considering how very busy the roads around school are at the beginning and end of the day.

Also, it has come to our attention that several children in year six are using the WhatsApp messaging service and that they are messaging each other in the early hours of the morning between 1.00am and 3.00am.

The minimum age for using WhatsApp is 13 years old so no year six children should be using it; we have also had to deal with several incidents in school which have occurred as a direct result of children’s inappropriate conversations via the app.

I therefore also ask year six parents and carers to discuss this issue with your children and to find out if they are using WhatsApp and whether they are using it overnight?

As a school, safeguarding our children is of paramount importance; it is our core purpose. Children using their phones unregulated overnight is a significant safeguarding concern. If staff continue to become aware of, for example, inappropriate WhatsApp use then such incidences will be fully investigated which may lead to other agency involvement.

Year six is a tough year and, especially when considering the implications of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, they all need to arrive at school fresh and rested after having had a really good night’s sleep.

There is a significant amount of information concerning e-safety; how parents can regulate children’s access to messaging services such as WhatsApp and Facebook and apps which can be downloaded onto an adult’s phone to facilitate this.

If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me, especially if advice required regarding parental control applications.

Thank you for your cooperation with both these issues.

FREE Bikeability cycle training for year 6 (Monday 16th – Thursday 19th May)

Just some advance notice that the year 6 children will have the opportunity to have FREE cycle training (level 1 and 2) in school during the week commencing Monday 16th May.  This is practical training on how to be a safer road user and learning the rules of the road.

The children need to be relatively confident cyclists as Level 1 skills will be taught on the playground, but Level 2 skills will require them to cycle on quiet local roads (carefully supervised by all the Bikeability staff as always).

If your child cannot yet ride a bike, please practise with them during the Easter holidays if you get a chance. If they are still struggling after Easter, please contact the school as it may be possible for Bikeability to arrange some basic training so they don’t miss out on the Level 1 & 2 training later in May.

It is essential the children have a roadworthy bike and cycle helmet that fits securely.  (Please contact school if your child does not already own a bike and we will ask Bikeability if they are able to loan your child a bike to use during the training).

The letter and consent form will be sent out nearer the time for parents to complete and return to school – but for more information a copy can be read here – Bikeability letter for parents 2022

Here are some useful links from the Bikeability website about what the training covers:

Bikeability Level 1 – Maintain your cycle, Glide and Control your bike

Bikeability Level 2 – Start & stop, Passing vehicles & Understand the road

Message from Mary Webb – Junior STEAM Club has had to be cancelled!

May Webb will not be running Junior STEAM Club face to face for the remaining 2 sessions this term (THIS week Thursday 2nd Dec and NEXT week Thursday 9th Dec). This is due to increased COVID numbers in the locality. We are delighted to have met the pupils and to have had 3 weeks with them.

Mary Webb are preparing an exciting pack of the remaining activities and Mrs Mould will be in touch with school soon with details on these and some video links so you can enjoy the activities at home.
