Monday 6th July

Hello, Room 5! I hope you all had a lovely weekend and a super time getting to know Mrs Pope a little better. This week has an art theme. I will post the maths and English tasks on here as usual. Mrs Gwyther will have posted an art activity for the afternoon.

Maths

As this week has an art theme, we will focus on shape and pattern this week in Maths. Start by watching the following video. Please don’t worry about understanding the term ‘radial symmetry’ (this is not a Year 1 objective!) – it just means that the design or pattern has many lines of symmetry. symmetry and art

You may want to make some of your own symmetrical patterns and pictures using natural materials. Confident children could try making designs which have more than one line of symmetry.

Here are some patterns for you to complete. Remember to take care with the colours you use too. shape patterns Can you see how the big pattern at the bottom of the sheet has symmetry? When you have completed it, see if you can spot where the lines of symmetry would be  – a small mirror would be great for this.

Next time you are out and about, see if you can spot any patterns and interesting shapes in the nature or in the buildings around you.

English

Today we are going to have a go at writing a postcard or a letter pretending that we are one of the crayons from the story, ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’ by Drew Daywalt.

Start by listening to the story: The Day the Crayons Quit How does the narrator make the story enjoyable to listen to? Do you like the voices he uses for each of the characters?! Choose one of the crayons who has written to Duncan to say they’ve had enough. Pretend that this crayon packs his or her bag and leaves Duncan’s home to have an adventure somewhere. Where could they visit? What would they see or do there? Maybe the crayon goes to the beach for the day or perhaps they go shopping in a big city. Maybe they visit a castle or a museum, or maybe they spend the day relaxing in the garden!

Remember to use capital letters and full stops in your sentences. I would also like you to include at least one sentence that uses an exclamation mark and one that uses a question mark. When you have finished, read back your work and check it carefully. You may want to cut out your postcard and draw a picture of the place the crayon is visiting on the other side!

Friday 3rd July

Hi, everyone. Well, it’s Friday again! Thank you all for making this week such a lovely one and for working so hard. I am very excited about seeing you in the Autumn term as Year 1s! Here are our activities for Friday.

Maths

Today we are going to have a go at some taking away, or subtraction.  Most children find this harder than adding. Watch the Numberblock video to remind you what it means if you subtract. Numberblocks subtraction Can you see the sign that tells us we are taking away? See if you can solve the calculations on the sheet. Every time you take away an amount, cross the right number of mini beasts off to help you see how many are left. Using toys to represent the numbers on the sheet may also help. You will see that the sheets are differentiated, so if you are feeling more confident you can try page 3 or even page 5. English

Today I would like you to reflect on your time as reception children and tell me about some of your favourite memories. What have you really enjoyed? What have some of your favourite activities been? Who have your friends been? Use the sheet to write words, phrases or sentences: end-of-the-year-writing-activity-sheet

Computing

Do you know anyone that has a treehouse? Maybe you have a den in your garden that it is really fun to play in! You could always have a go at making one!

Have fun designing different treehouses for each of the characters by clicking and dragging on the items you want in this game: Arthur’s Treehouse game Listen carefully as each character has a special request for their design!

Thursday 2nd July

Hi, everyone. Thanks for working so hard yesterday. As the week goes by, I am getting to know more and more about lots of you which is lovely. Here are the activities for Thursday.

Maths

Today we are going to be doing some counting. Have a look at the fairy tale characters on the sheet. I Spy and Add characters

Do you recognise any of these characters? What stories are they from? Count how many there are of each character and then use what you have found out to solve the addition number sentences. Using buttons or toys may help with adding the numbers practically. addition number sentences

English

Continuing with the fairy tale theme, think about your favourite fairy tale. You may want to listen to this story before you do today’s English task.

Why do you like this story? Can you tell an adult who the characters are in this story and who you like best in the story? Draw a picture of your favourite fairy tale character and then write some words, phrases or sentences to describe them. If you are a confident writer, try to use some really amazing words in your writing.

Music

The recent weather has inspired this afternoon’s music session! Do you know the song, ”It’s Raining, It’s Pouring’? Watch the video and do your best to join in: ‘It’s raining, it’s pouring’ song

What does rain sound like? Do you like the sound of rain pattering on your roof? I do! Is rain always heavy? Does it sound different when it is lighter? Now let’s be creative thinking about ways that we could make rain sounds using either ourselves – we call this body percussion – or things we can find around the house!

How could you use your body to make the sound of light rain? How about clicking your fingers or gently tapping your hand with a finger? Now think about how to make the noise of heavier rain. How about clapping softly? Finally, think of how you could make the sound of super heavy rain! Maybe clapping loudly or even stamping!

Can you create your own piece of ‘rain music’ in this way? Maybe an adult can conduct you and tell you whether the rain is light, medium or heavy! Other family members could join in too.

Wednesday 1st July

Hi everyone,

Well, can you believe that we are now into July?! It is incredible how fast the year is passing us by. It was lovely to see your work yesterday. Here are our activities for Wednesday.

Maths

Today we are going to think about shapes. Have fun watching the song and shout the names of each shape as it comes on the screen: 2D shape song You may know the names of some other shapes too.

Using the sheet of shapes, or by drawing around items you have at home, can you make a shape picture? It can be of anything you like and it can be as complicated as you want it to be. As you make your picture, tell an adult what shape you are using and count the number of sides that it has. Here are some examples of pictures you could make:

When you have finished your picture, count up how many of each shape you used. Tell an adult why you chose to use certain shapes for things in your picture too.

Next time when you are out and about, see if you can spot any shapes in the nature around you too. You may like to take some photos of what you find and email them to me!

English

Yesterday you made some super colour monsters! Use the sheet to either draw your colour monster or to design a brand new monster. Maybe you have made a monster for the maths activity using the 2D shapes. Can you write some words, phrases or sentences about your monster on the lines provided? If you are a confident writer, see if you can include some really fabulous words in your description! Design a monster

Science

When you start in Year 1, one of the first things we will be learning about in science is materials. We will start by looking at things made out of wood, plastic, glass and metal and describe how they feel. You might already know about these materials and can possibly name some more!

Have a look around your house and see if you can find two things made from each of the materials named above. Have a chat with a grown up about how these different things feel. Can you think of some words to describe these textures?

Now, using the sheet, look around your house for items which match each texture and either draw it or write down what you find: texture-hunt-activity-sheet

Thanks for working so hard yesterday. It was so lovely to hear from lots of you and to find out more about what you like and to see examples of your work. Here are our activities for Tuesday.

Maths

I was in my garden earlier and saw a lovely butterfly on one of the flowers, so that gave me inspiration to do a maths task connected to butterflies! I am sure you have talked about symmetry before but, if you have forgotten what it means, watch this short demonstration of a child having fun making a symmetrical butterfly picture using paint (you only need to watch up to 1 minute): symmetrical butterfly video

If you have paints, you may want to have a go at making your own butterfly similar to the one in the video. Alternatively, you can use these sheets to complete the symmetrical design with either paint or with colouring pencils/felt tips: complete-a-symmetrical-butterfly-pattern-fingerprint-activity-sheet 

There is also this sheet if you want to start completely from scratch or work on a more complicated design: butterfly-outline-colouring-sheet

Using a mirror can be really helpful when you are learning about symmetry. Can you see the dotted line going through the middle of the butterfly? Well, if you place your mirror along that line, you can keep checking to see if your design is actually symmetrical because you should see the same design with or without the mirror!

Thank you for telling me all about yourselves yesterday. Today I want to hear more about any pets that you have. Use the sheet to fill in details about either one of your pets or an animal that belongs to a family member: all-about-a-pet-activity-sheet

You may be super keen to do more writing so, if you would like a challenge, have a go at writing some short sentences about the animals shown on these sheets. There are some helpful words on the sheets as well as some reminders of what good sentences need!  pets-early-writing-activities

PSHE/Art

Yesterday you went on a colour hunt and did really well finding all sorts of things to match each colour. Today we are going to stay thinking about colour and have a go at making our own ‘colour monsters’ that suit our mood of the day!

Use the link to watch the video. It starts with the story of the colour monster and talks about different feelings being different colours. Then there is a demonstration of how to make your very own colour monster. You don’t have to use the equipment that the teacher in the video uses if you don’t have these materials. Hi everyone. Well, how exciting is this?! I hope you all had a super weekend and are looking forward to becoming Year 1 children in a few weeks time. Every day this week it will be me posting an English task, maths task and an afternoon activity for you to have a go at. English

It would be lovely to know more about each one of you. Use the sheet to tell me more about what you like, don’t like, something about your family and what you want to be when you are an adult. Don’t forget to write your name at the top and to draw a picture of yourself too! Feel free to write extra words or sentences on a separate piece of paper if you want to. Maths

One of my favourite things is teddy bears. Have a look at the patterns and finish them using a bear who is the right size and colour. Some of the sheets are harder than others, so only print off the sheets you feel confident doing. sorting-bear-repeating-patterns-differentiated-activity-sheets-

Can you then make your own pattern using pictures or shapes of your choice? Maybe you could make a pattern using pictures of your favourite things. You don’t have to use the sheet; if you prefer you can make your pattern using things around your house and then take a photo of it.

Art

How many colours can you name? What is your favourite colour? Mine is red. Use the scavenger hunt sheet to go searching for things that are each of the different colours. You only need one of the sheets on this file! If you are feeling confident, try page 3 but otherwise stick to either page 1 or 2. Transition week

Hi, reception children and parents! I have taken over Room 4’s class page for the next few days as this week is our transition week.  I am very excited because I will be your new teacher in September when you are grown up Year 1s! This is a great chance for you to get to know me and for me to get to know you.

Friday 26th June: Daily Challenges

You have two challenges today. The first is the egg and spoon challenge and the second is the tea towel hurdles!

Challenge 1: Egg and Spoon

Do you remember doing the egg and spoon race at Sports Day?! For this, you will need a steady hand and plenty of focus.

You will also need:

  • some spoons – these can be of a size of your choice. Younger children may want to use a tennis racket
  • an egg, potato or ball! Younger children could alternatively use a bean bag or a soft toy
  • two markers placed 3m apart, or further if you want a greater challenge!
  • a stopwatch or timer

How many ‘shuttles’ can you do in 30 seconds? Keep trying to beat your personal best!

Challenge 2: Tea Towel Hurdles

For our second challenge, you will need some outdoor space and four tea towels or towels to jump over. How many ‘shuttles’ can you do in 30 seconds? If you want to make it harder for yourself, add more tea towels!
