Welcome to our Class

Welcome to Room 3.  Year 2 is an absolutely fantastic year.  We are the oldest children in Key Stage 1.  It is a year in which we make the big change from being in key Stage one to being ready for Key Stage 2.  We are role models for younger children and are always ready for any challenge.

How to support our learning!

There are many ways you can help at home.

Reading to an adult every day for around 10 minutes is probably the most important thing you can do to help your child.  The school sends a reading book and Reading Record with your child every day.  In Room 3, when we have finished our book, we put it in the box in the classroom.  It will then be changed and the Reading Record will be checked.  You should be aiming to change your book about 3 times a week.

As you become a more confident reader, you will move on to Accelerated Reader.  This is where the children get to choose their own book from a selection that are at the right level for them.  As these books are a little longer, they may take longer to read.  It is still really important to hear you child read, even when they are confident.  The children will complete quizzes based on the books that they have read within school.

When you are listening to your child read, ask them questions about what is happening in the book. Why they think that is happening,  what they think might happen next. Pick out any interesting language and discuss it. Ask them to point to the sentence that tells them something. eg “Show me where it tells you Little Red Ridinghood wears a red cape.” or “What word tell you that she is happy?”

Another lovely thing that you can do to help your child develop as a reader is to read to them.  choose a book you will both enjoy, snuggle up somewhere cosy and share a story.  This teaches children lots of things about how written language works, using their imagination and finding out about events that they may never get to experience.

Each week your child will receive spellings to practise. Please help them to learn them.  Some of these spellings will be based on the sounds or rules that we are learning about in class,  some of them are based on the Year 1 and 2 ‘Common Exception Words’.  see below.
